* Yiddish is the Judeo-German language that was spoken by the Ashkenazic Jews of Central and Eastern Europe and by their descendants, while Ladino is the Judeo-Spanish language that was spoken by the Sephardic Jews of the Iberian peninsula and their descendants. Yiddish is based on medieval High German, but contains strong Hebraic, Aramaic, and Slavic elements, as well. Ladino is based on medieval Castilian Spanish with significant Hebraic, Aramaic, Arabic, and other Mediterranean influences. Both languages are written using Hebrew characters. (Since the early twentieth century, Ladino has also been written with Latin characters.)
